What Is Angioedema?

Angioedema is swelling underneath the skin. It's usually a reaction to a trigger, such as a medicine or something you're allergic to. It is not normally serious, but it can be a recurring problem for some people and can very occasionally be life-threatening if it affects breathing. Which can cause long term medical complications. Usually ongoing treatment can help keep the swelling under control.

Symptoms Of Angioedema

The swelling most often affects the:

  • Hands

  • Feet

  • Area around the eyes

  • Lips and tongue

  • Genitals

Many people also have a raised, itchy rash called urticaria (hives).

In more serious cases, angioedema can also cause breathing difficulties, tummy (abdominal) pain and dizziness.

Causes Of Angioedema

There are several different types of Angioedema, each of which has a different cause. An episode can be caused by:

  • An allergic reaction, such as a food allergy. This is known as allergic angioedema

  • A medicine, such as angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors for high blood pressure. This is referred to as drug-induced angioedema

  • A genetic fault that you inherit from your parents – this is a rare, lifelong condition that usually starts in childhood called hereditary angioedema

But in many cases, it's not clear what causes Angioedema. This is known as idiopathic Angioedema.

Treatment For Angioedema

The treatment for Angioedema depends on what's causing it, this is because there are several different types of Angioedema, each of which has a different cause.

Allergic & Idiopathic Angioedema, treatment for both of these types of Angioedema are usually treated in a similar way:

Avoiding triggers: Avoiding particular substances or activities that trigger your symptoms may help reduce your chances of experiencing swelling.

Antihistamines: This medication works by blocking the effects of histamine, one of the chemicals responsible for the swelling.

Some antihistamines can make you feel drowsy. Avoid driving, drinking alcohol or operating dangerous machinery if you experience this. If your symptoms of swelling occur during the day, it's best to take non-drowsy medicines such as cetirizine and loratadine.

Adrenaline auto-injectors: If you have a particularly serious allergy, you may be given adrenaline auto-injectors to use if you experience a severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis).

Drug-induced Angioedema

If a certain medicine you're taking is thought to be responsible for your Angioedema, your doctor will usually advise stopping it. They can prescribe a different medicine for you to take instead. This is usually all that needs to be done. Tell your doctor if your symptoms continue or come back after switching medicine.

Hereditary Angioedema

Hereditary angioedema cannot be cured, but medicines can help prevent and treat the swelling if an episode occurs. Usually a GP will prescribe either Danazol or Oxandrolone which can help reduce the chances of swelling occurring if you have hereditary angioedema.

These medications boost the levels of C1 esterase inhibitor in your blood. Low levels of this substance are what causes the swelling.

A medicine called tranexamic acid may sometimes be used for children and women. This causes fewer side effects, but may not be as effective in preventing swelling.

Many people who have suffer with Angioedema or have had previous episodes, have been accepted for Life Insurance. Insurers will however accept applications based on how many you have suffered and if there are other conditions. By writing to your GP to confirm your treatment and whether there are any medical complications. Also the impact the condition has on their lifestyle and ability to work.
