What Is Marfan Syndrome?

Marfan Syndrome is an inherited disease that affects the connective tissue in the body, which gives strength, support, and elasticity to tendons. It also impacts cartilage, heart valves, blood vessels, and other vital parts of your body.

People diagnosed with Marfan Syndrome have weaker strength in the connective tissue because of its unusual chemical makeup. The syndrome affects the bones, eyes, skin, lungs, and nervous system, along with the heart and blood vessels.

Symptoms Of Marfan Syndrome

Marfan Syndrome is a genetic disorder that has a wide range of signs and symptoms that varies from one person to another. They can also vary in how severe they are, this means that they can range from mild to life-threatening. Symptoms tend to get worse as you get older.

People diagnosed with Marfan Syndrome could have:

  • A tall, thin build

  • Disproportionately long arms, legs, fingers, and toes, along with flexible joints

  • Curvature of the spine

  • A chest that sinks in or sticks out

  • Crowded teeth

  • Flat feet

  • Heart murmurs

  • Stretch marks

Causes Of Marfan Syndrome

Marfan Syndrome is hereditary, which means it can be passed to a child from a parent who has the condition. Approximately 75% of people diagnosed with Marfan Syndrome has inherited it from a parent. The syndrome is defined as autosomal dominant, this means a child can inherit it even if only one parent has the condition.

The gene defect leads to abnormal production of a protein called Fibrillin, resulting in parts of the body being able to stretch abnormally. The defective fibrillin gene also causes some bones to grow longer than they should.

This means a person with Marfan Syndrome could be tall because their arms and legs grow longer than normal. In the remaining quarter 25% of cases, neither parent has the syndrome. In these cases, the fibrillin gene changes (mutates) for the first time in the parent's egg or sperm.

The mutated gene can be passed on to the child, who will then go on to develop the syndrome.

Treatment For Marfan Syndrome

There is currently no cure for Marfan Syndrome, all of the possible treatments focuses on managing the symptoms and reducing the risk of complications. Because Marfan Syndrome affects several different parts of the body, a treatment plan will be created by a team of different healthcare professionals.

A serious problem caused by Marfan syndrome can occur if the heart and the aorta, the body's main artery, are significantly affected. This can lead to a lower life expectancy.

Signs Of Marfan Syndrome

People are born with Marfan Syndrome and many related conditions, but they may not notice any features until later in life. However, features of Marfan Syndrome can appear at any age. Some people have many features at birth or as young children.
